Zamia furfuracea or the Zamia Calculus, fondly known as the ZZ plant, is considered a “living fossil”. It is known to have survived the earth since the dinosaurs. The leaves have a fern-like appearance, and the leaflets are packed tightly. ZZ is also the easiest houseplant to grow indoors – it is long-lasting and does not require much maintenance. The dark green leaves are attractive and come with many favourable traits. The plant is ideal for homes and offices and, according to studies, removes copious amounts of toxins from the air such as toluene, benzene, xylene and others. If you are a first-time plant owner, you must get this plant, which is otherwise native to eastern Africa. It is fast gaining popularity worldwide. Although this is a flowering plant, the flower might not grow as frequently. Indoors, the plant grows up to 2 to 4 feet and has a potato-like root. These are, therefore, classified as rhizomes due to their ability to store water and withstand drought conditions. Photosynthesis for these plants require minimal light, and even with little care, the plant seems healthy and happy. Of course, you must avoid over-watering and moisten the soil only when the top appears dry.
